As you may know we have had the issue of our web apps freezing up when a mysql dump is running.

It would appear that increasing the "key_buffer_size" to 512M in the file /etc/mysql/mysql.conf.d/mysqld.cnf greatly reduces the impact on usability of the sites while running a dump.
